Tonight at my baseball practice a kid was pitching that usually doesn't and I am on second base when he came set I took off. He then brings his leg up without stepping off the rubber and throws to third base to get me out. Is he allowed to do that or no because you can not throw directly to an unoccuppied base without stepping off the rubber.

If you are a righthanded pitcher, you only have to step toward third before making the throw as long as your left leg does not cross the plane of the pitching rubber. Andy Petitte does this perfectly when making the throw to first.

Rule 8.01(c) At any time during the pitcher’s preliminary movements and until his natural pitching motion commits him to the pitch, he may throw to any base provided he steps directly toward such base before making the throw.

Rule 8.05
If there is a runner, or runners, it is a balk when --
(c) The pitcher, while touching his plate, fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base;
Rule 8.05(c) Comment: Requires the pitcher, while touching his plate, to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base. If a pitcher turns or spins off of his free foot without actually stepping or if he turns his body and throws before stepping, it is a balk.

some of these answers are funny, a lot of people think they know what theyre talking about. the pitcher is allowed to lift his leg (that is not in the rubber) and step toward any base and throw there or not throw there as long as his leg does not cross his back leg or move forward passed an imaginary 45 degree angle. Hence left-handed pitchers picking people off of first without stepping back, and a right-handed pitcher attempting the "double move" to prevent a stolen base in a first and third situation.

Matt C is right. You pointed out the fact that you can not throw to an unoccupied base while you are on the rubber. You are correct but since you were stealing that move becomes legal.

From the set position, a pitcher may step and throw to a base in an attempt to retire a runner.

If the fielder is status on the backside, and the runner knocks him down, there is no unlawful action. If the fielder catches the ball and steps far off from the backside to sparkling from the runner, and the runner slides into him, it truly is prohibited, and interference is termed. If the fielder replaced into throwing the ball whilst the participant slid into him illegally, it truly is interference and the two the runner and batter are out. i'm particularly valuable in extreme college, interfering with the guy on 2nd is an automated fee ticket to a double play. extreme college umps are all approximately protecting the infants, so don't be too shocked.

Well playing HS baseball i know that, that kinda call is annoyin but if u figure that there is 1-2 umps in a game (i am not sure where u play so i am not sure on the amount) but i mean an ump may have jus missed it. yea it is aggravating but you really can't do nething more than jus let it go. Just don't let it hang with u in the future.

Good Luck

ok he is allowed to do that, but his back foot HAS to come off the rubber. if you watch a little baseball you can prevent this from happening

The pitcher's move was perfectly legal, as he was making a play on you. He did not need to step off.
