I'm having the hardest time finding a replacement oil filter for my 1979 Yamaha XS 650. I'm trying to stay away from paying the outrageous prices dealers charge. Can anybody recommend me a place or site where I can get one? Thanks.

Spend the extra $2 and get the piece of mind of getting a quality product.
Aftermarket oil filters aren't made to the high standards of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture).
It's your bike. Do what you like.

Filters are available from Yamaha dealers locally or from Mike XS in Florida. Mikes are great, reasonably priced and never had a problem with them.

ATTN: The XS650 does not have a paper oil filter! There is only a metal screen. That is why the price is so high. Remove the filter and see it for yourself.
If you do some internet searches you should be able to find a kit that converts the bike to a paper filter.
