Actually the history goes back a bit farther.
Cabbage patch kids was a mass market incarnation of a handcrafted line of dolls called "Little Persons". They were never referred to a dolls, and you had to visit "Babyland General Hospital" and "adopt" one, if you wanted one. This was in 1976...
