Is it hard to root for the Sox this year? (2007) Only 9 of the 23 players have been with the Red Sox for more than one year (or were drafted and are beginning their rookie season with them). Most of the pitchers are brand new to the Sox, and there are 8 players who just came to the Red Sox last year.
It's more like rooting for an all-star team recruited in the last two years than rooting for the home-town team.

BTW, I'm a Sox fan.
Here are the ones I count as with the Sox more than one year (or drafted and playing their first year with Boston):
Papelbon
Schilling
Wakefield
Mirabelli
Varitek
Youkilis
Ramírez
Ortiz
Timlin
Lester
Pedroia

That's 11 with -long- experience with the Sox, not 9. Sorry.

First of all, I count 16 players that have been with this team for more that one year, but I get your general point. There are a number of players on this team that are playing their 2nd season with the Sox.
It is very easy to root for this team. Being a fan of a team from one of the larger sports markets in the country, you get really use to the idea that baseball is a business not just a sport. There have been many Sox teams in the last 20 years that have had this many newbies and the teams were awful. They have a good mix of young players (even if not all of them are home grown) and all-stars.
Yankees 14.5 back!

Nature of the game in recent decades; nearly every team is a mix of farm harvests, trade returns, and some free agents.
Consider who is left from the 2004 champion (I do so love those words) team -- Schilling, Ramirez, Ortiz, Varitek (the big stars), Mirabelli, Wakefield (who is the senior Sok by a long measure), and that's all I can find. Six carryovers in a four-year span. Nature of the game.
They wear the colors and play well while doing so. Asking for more is simply selfish.

oh it's definitely rooting for the home team. besides, we haven't made the best moves so far: nixon for drew (right now anyway...)? gonzo for lugo? and the yankees spent so much on the rockett who is not exelling in the minors? that's buying. at least dicek mostly comes through
the best players have been here for at least a year: manny, ortiz, yuk, lowell, becket, pap, schil, wake, tek, coco etc.
btw-how is it hard to root for the red sox right now?!?! or are you just a sore-loser- yankees fan? if so you have absolutely NO faith.

I don't like a lot of the moves they have made in the last couple of years. J.D. Drew is a joke and it is sad that they gave him so much money and they will get next to nothing in return. They don't have much left from the Series team other than Ortiz, Schilling, Manny, and Varitek.

haha, no. Probably one of my all time favorite lineups. Not one bad seed in the bunch and they all get along great. Its amazing the difference in the demeanor of the Red Sox dugout compared to the Yankee dugout.

I don't find it hard at all. They are the home-town team; for this girl anyway.
