Whenever your head is underwater, you should be steadily breathing out of your nose. A quick force of air out your nose will sometimes be followed by a short intake of water.
In each stroke for swim team except backstroke, you will be breathing in through your mouth and out through your nose in a rhythmic pattern.
The best practice I've ever taught is to do bobs breathing in out of the water and out through your nose while underwater. It's a simple exercise, but doing it for 2 minutes without taking two breaths between going underwater will really get your body used to breathing out underwater and will hopefully fix your troubles.

In addition to doing bobs (which are a great exercise!) you can do it by humming. When you hum, your mouth is closed and you are breathing out your nose slowly. The best to show you how this works is to hold the wall with one or two hands. Take a deep breath. Start humming and slowly sink into the water until it is covering your nose. If you continue to hum you will not get water up your nose. Coupled with bobs, you should have no problem becoming conditioned to not holding your nose.
Good luck!

Practice putting your head under water and see if you can control your throat to not let water up your nose. Blow a little air through your nose, if any gets in.
Use this same technique of closing your airway to your nose with your throat and breath out slowly through your nose when diving.

i'm afraid this might only be simply by distinctive shapes of nostril -- some human beings can do this (and tumble turns, swimming inverted underwater etc.) without ever getting water up their noses, and a few (like me) can no longer, no rely how plenty we breathe out. I only evade doing it! on no account leap from a height and carry your nostril, as your arm might nicely be compelled upwards once you hit the water, injuring your self. what's incorrect with a mask? If swimming (extremely than snorkelling) you may constantly use a nostril-clip.
