Do you have to say "the ether"? Can you just say "ether"? As in, "looking into ether..."

I mean ether without an "i". I saw it described in the dictionary as "space". One looks into space not into the space so I thought maybe ether was the same.

It depends what you're talking about.

Ether (pronounced EE-ther) is a narcotic gas, once commonly used by dentists and doctors to sedate patients. "The doctor told the nurse to increase the flow of ether to the distressed patient."

Ether (pronounced ETH-er) describes some nebulous miasma, like radio waves or imagination. "The writer plucked her ideas from the ether of her imaginings."

Be sure that you don't mean "either", which is spelled with an I but pronounced "EE-ther." "Looking into either option was depressing."

You are looking into the ether. Using "the" lets the reader know what you are referring to.

Aren't you talking about the ether in the radio waves going on around us that we exploit in our computers?

One form is going to become more popular as time goes by--the English language is a "living" language. We don't know yet which form will be more popular, time will tell.

Use whichever one you want, it's not clear yet which way will be more popular so you won't be wrong in whichever one you use.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Either you are saying ether, as in the knockout gas, or The Aether, the universal substrate.

Does that help?
