Having had to personally depend on all three to save my life on more than one occasion yes they are some of the finest men and women in our feckin screwed up world and ought to be given anything they want from the people as a thank you. The only decent thing we could do would be to treat these heroes with the respect a very worthy group.

This year I have had occasion to call on the fire and ambulance services twice each. They were absolutely wonderful and I can't thank them enough for what they did. In conversation the crew told me of incidents where, while attending emergencies, they and/or their vehicles had been attacked and equipment stolen or vandalised. In one incident, where the ambulance crew were attending a man who suffered a cardiac arrest at home, other members of his family stole the satnav from the ambulance! It beggars belief.

I work in Trauma Services and I can tell you pre-hospital providers dont get the appreciation they deserve. MD's and RN's have everything they need at their fingertips, in a controlled environment - paramedics, firefighters and cops are the first on-scene with so many elements and decisions to juggle...they set the tone for everything that follows.

I think you would be surprised how well received a call would be to the local fire department. Telling them the story of what has moved you to express thanks will go along way for them. Also, writing a short note or e-mail and sending it to the firehouse in that area or the city fire department. This is not something that happens all of the time for them and it is ALWAYS well received and sincerely appreciated. Actually, I think that the act of saying "thank you" is underestimated by many people and it is the best way to reinforce the good in people and their work.

Probably not. We only appreciate them when we need them. But that's like a lot of other stuff in life.

I don't think we are at all!! Example... I worked at Chili's in my hometown and police are the only ones to get a discount... FD doesn't, Military doesn't, EMTs don't... PD ONLY. I think it's ridiculous.

I try to do that... I figure I did it for 21 years so I do appreciate the people who still do it... The cool part is I now know when it's going to rain thanks for being clobbered on the motorcycle at work...
