Have a universal public service from age 18 or on completion of High School for 3 years, one would have a choice, public service jobs, which job corps could then contract and replace fruit pickers and other migrant workers for the cheap wages, public serive employement such as candy striper or nurses aide type work at public and VA hospitals, the military, and other jobs such as picking up trash along the highways , raking leaves, meals on wheels, even the disabled could do something. At the end of their service, those who chose non military could then recieve educational grants such as the no longer existant pell grant for trade or educational goals, the military would recive the GI bill. Those who also apply for welfare wopuld be required to join this work force and earn their checks as well

What do you think, at least then we could pres 1 for English!

I think the idea would make us feel better about those welfare checks that are distributed to the lazy a$$es who want to be supported... Make them work for their $$ like the rest of us do.. great idea!

Compulsary 'service' - slavery to the state - is never desireable. Voluntary 'service' - the equivalent of state-supplied jobs, along the lines of the CCC in the 30's - isn't the greatest idea, either, but there are times when it could be worth doing.

The problem with both is that they tend to ignore market forces - unlike, ironically, illegal immigration, which is very market-driven, albeit, black/grey market.

That sounds like a plan for welfare recipients. Who is paying the bills for 18 to 21 year-olds while they aren't earning enough to be out on their own? Other than that, sounds like a good idea.

Disagree. I am against forced labor. What we need to do is stop expecting the government to get involved in every problem. What we need is less employee taxes so it is not viable to hire illegals.

I like your idea of something for something.

Brother Paul, I salute you.

This is perhaps one of the best postings I've seen - from you or anyone.

Forget the "press 1 for English," my brother...

Nice posting.
