They both have cultural minorities : French Quebec, Italian Tirol.

They both have a relative majority of Catholics.

They both have similar parties : Conservatives, Liberals, social-democrats, regional parties and Greens.

They both adopt a European-style socially corrected market economy.

They both belong to the G-7, and are among the smaller members of that group.

Both have economies that vary greatly from region to region, both in terms of structure and strength (Mezzogiorno).

They both trade a great deal with a large partner : US, Euro-Zone.

They both face the challenges of an aging population.
