Does the Royal Family have any political power in the UK or are they just there for "figure-heads"?? Do they work in conjunction with the Prime Minister or just as a means of advice for the PM?

Most countries have a head of state and a government leader. In the US that role is combined in the president's office.

In the UK, the Queen is the head of state, she represents the country, its heritage and traditions. She can advise, but she does not have political power. She does have the right to be consulted on anything the Prime Minister wants to do, and she is the only one who can open Parliament, etc. The Royal Family has no political power.

The Prime Minister is the head of government, and with Parliament, does the actual law making and ruling. The system has worked well, with one interuption, for a thousand years.

The Queen has no political power. She can advise but the Prime Minister is not bound to accept her advice. She has the right to be informed and has meetings with the PM every week.

The rest of the royal family has nothing to do with politics.

My understanding is that the Queen as Head of state does have a little bit of power in the sense that she signs off on a Bill so it becomes a law and what not. Also someone that has the ear of the Prime Minister to chew whether or not he accepts it has an enormous influence. Although I am not British, I am an Aussie and she is also our Head of State represented by the Govenor General and during the 1970's our Govenor General disolved parliament. That is one of the privelages of the Queen.

If the Royal family tried to exercise any political power there WOULD be a revolution.

THey are just figureheads. Technically they have no political power however they can provide a lot of social influence and be excellent diplomats/representatives for their countries.
