now depending on the model year it could be a vacuum leak if after '88 being fuel injected the most simple fix if to look for broken or damaged lines and repair them. Also look at the throllte body base gasket for possible break

have u cked the radiator fluid? it sounds silly but my 93 buick does this when it is lo on coolant.. ck it out. also make sure ur air intake is in the proper place as a change in air flow will make funny things happen..
