Ferret-proofing is an ongoing battle that ferret owners face. =)
Ferrets get into anything and everything. Ferret-proofing a room is putting all your valuables and breakables out of reach of the bandit.
If you have breakable collectible out where your ferret can access them, they WILL get knocked down and broken (I've lost a few drinking glasses by forgetting to put them out of reach). They also like to steal and hide away stuff. With my ferrets, anything is fair game. My Ghost hides all the toys. Calypso hoards food. And Bear, well he's special. He will one by one, drag all my shoes under my king-sized bed.
Also, ferret-proofing is getting rid of anything that is potentially harmful to the ferret. This ranges from recliners to pencil erasers.
The number one cause of accidental death in ferrets is intestinal blockage. Ferrets have a tendency to eat stuff that isn't so good for them. Soft rubbery or foamy things (pencil erasers, styrofoam peanuts, remote control buttons) are their favorite chew toys. The problem is when it gets stuck in their intestinal tract and either A) kills them or B) requires an almost $1000 surgery to remove.
The second cause of accidental death is the dreaded recliner. Ferrets love to burrow and a recliner is the perfect place. However, the gears and everything inside of the recliner will crush and/or decapitate a ferret when someone sits down and opens/closes the recliner without knowing a ferret is sleeping inside.
Also, holes to the world outside their ferret-proofed home need to be blocked.
Kitchens are dangerous because of all the appliances. Best to not let your fert loose in the kitchen.
No matter how well you ferret proof your home, unless you have a ferret-specific room just for them, ferrets will find a way to hurt themselves. The best rule is to always be attentive while your ferret is roaming free and to cage them when you're not home and at night.

when you ferret-proof a room, it means there are no holes, electrical cords, or anything that might harm a ferret, or that a ferret might get into. basically it is making sure that the room a ferret roams around in is perfectly safe and ferret-friendly!
