The lightning doesn't keep hitting on a straight line every few seconds. You will see the lightning before you hear the thunder that happens through the clashing of air currents- light travels faster than sound.
If your dad is taking a walk down the street in a city, there is no danger.
The lightning will hit the highest point sticking out on a platform, that is why the life guards discourage people from swimming or wondering around the beach, because the odds are higher in that plain field.

In a regular town most high buildings have lightning rods that will transfer it to the ground without causing any harm.

So your dad is safe unless he is taking a walk on an utterly empty field with not a single tree or a building in sight.

Wish you the best.

This can roughly be estimated by measuring the interval between the lightning flash and the start of the thunder. If you count the time in seconds and then divide by three, you will have the approximate distance in kilometres. Thunder is rarely heard at a distance of more than 20 km.

Hope your dad got home o.k. The above should put your mind at rest if it happens again

Since light travels faster than sound, here is the way that it cane be done, for every five seconds the sound travel one mile, so if he has a watch on, have him look at it when the lightning strikes, then when he hears thunder, look at it again and see what the difference is. The calculation is for every second that passes, it is 1/5 mile.

There is no way to really tell. Remember lightning can strike many miles away from the actual storm. Here is an idea, get in the car and go pick him up.
