Above post is correct.

A SECRET clearance requires only a criminal records check.

A TOP SECRET, on the other hand, requires a full background investigation, which will include interviews with neighbors, friends, former employers, and about anyone else you've ever had contact with.

I had a secret security clearance investigation when I worked for the Navy at North Island. Yes, they investigate everyone and everything, and believe me they find everything. The best thing is to be honest about everything. Even neighbors are interviewed so if you have someone you listed that you feel will give a derogatory description of you just make that remark on your application. For sure if you had any felony charges they will show up as even if you expunge a record the FBI files maintain everything. Good luck to you. I hope you get your clearance.

Not for a Secret clearance but for a Top Secret clearances they will do contact interviews with your character references. If they find anything suspicious they will interview references given by the character references and anybody else they think will get them the full story.

When I was up for a security clearance, they interviewed friends/family/co-workers, etc. Anyone they thought may have information regarding my past or that may show that I lied on the questionnaire for the security clearance.

YES! And your neighbors, cousins, aunts, uncles...
When I got my security clearance back in 1964, they claimed that each investigation cost about $10,000.00! At the rate of inflation we have had since then, that would mean more than $100,000.00 in today's money.
If you have no skeleton's in your closet, you have nothing to be concerned about. But, believe me, if you sneezed, if you went to Mexico for the day, or whatever, they will know.
They check everywhere; all the police records of every place you have lived or visited; national and international (if you went outside the borders) police, every one every thing every where.

i got my security clearance when i went to MEPS. before boot camp i had no interview after MEPS The clearance is usually good for about 5 years before you must be re interviewed. (just because you have a security clearance dosent mean you will ever know anything that is a "secret") alot of people get them without even knowing that they have one.
