Windows XP?
Here are my personal suggestions, remember I take no blame for any damages =]
On your desktop try to delete icons you don't use or put them into a single folder, less stuff on your desktop the better.
Get more RAM which is like quick memory, speeds up alot but a lil costly.
Delete programs you don't use anymore.
Make sure nothing runs in the background.
Set Windows XP to a performance look (Makes it look ugly but quicker, Right Click on My Computer, Go Advanced Tab, 1st Settings, and select Performance.)

If you add and remove files frequently, defragmenting the hard drive may help. Removing unnecessary start-up programs helps as well. Be careful with this. Some of the programs you don't recognize are part of Windows and your computer may not work properly if your remove them. If in doubt, have someone that knows more actually look at your machine.

Well quite often downlaoding matters could make it slower. Although there's a software known as Syware Bot. If you Google it you'll be able to down load it. I feel it's $60 despite the fact that. It reveals all of the spyware and adware to your laptop and deletes it. However, if you do not wish to do this, move into Add and Remove techniques and delete matters you not use or want.

Just that - don't download anything.
In fact, delete some stuff. Delete files you don't use, from your hard drive; delete programs you don't use, etc.
Defragment, upgrade RAM, upgrade processor. Never use a Celeron, no matter the clock speed.

Check your computer for virus and spyware.
Run disk cleanup, click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup.
After you run diskcleanup, go back into system tools and run disk defrag. Do it at a time that you will be away from the computer.
