well any kind will do personally i would recomend a canon or a lexmark printer, and generally you will hook it up VIA USB port on the back (or front) of your computer, (the only two options other than USB are serial which is old and it won't be used anymore so don't worry about that and Firewire but thats more expensive for the company to supply so they don't.) so yea just the same as a memory stick, or webcam. and it doesn't matter if its Dell Compaq Hp or one i built they will hook in the same way. you may have to use a CD that they supply you with, just do a complete install
hope i helped

You do not need to have any kind of specific printer for a Dell computer. ANY printer will work just fine.
All you need to do is find out which printer meets your needs. In other words, go to a store and tell the guy/gal what you intend to do with your printer and they will aim you in the right direction.
From there, all you need to do is follow the directions to hook it up.

Are you planning on just printing, or would you like to scan photos, fax, copy etc?
I have an HP Officejet 6110 color multifunction printer, scanner, copier, & fax machine. It works great and connects to the computer via USB cable. Simply setup your printer out of the box, install the software that comes with the printer on a cd, plug the usb cable when when told to do so, and your setup at that point is complete and your ready to start printing. Setup takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on user abilities and knowhow.
