Amen. I'm a liberal myself and while I'm not likely going to be voting for (I haven't completely ruled him out yet) him, I would shake his hand because that is what an honorable gentleman does.
It's kind of ridiculous that people wouldn't vote for him because he is a Mormon. Unlike some other Republican contenders (McCain, Giuliani, Gingrich) he has been faithful for as you said 28 years and that is commendable.

What about the Muslim guy?
I'm sure those saying "Oh what a shame that people make such a big deal about Romney's religion are the same one's that DO make a big deal out of the other guy."
Plus as an exmormon, I know what mormons stand for, and if I think that he is going to try to change the make-up of this country based on his Mormon/LDS beliefs that I don't agree with (just like any other candidate), then hel'l no, I'm not gonna vote for him.

They said the same thing about JFK. They said he would only do what the Pope told him. We got a surprise. He defied the Pope on several things. Mitt is a Mormon . SO WHAT. I am a Pentecostal but does that mean I do every thing Springfield , MO tells me to. NO. I do try to live my life the best I can & yes I try to do as my religion ask, only because I believe the same as them. So reliegion should have nothing to do with anything. We elect a person not a relegion. There are some people who do not want anyone believing in GOD to run for any office CHURCH & STATE you know.

Heres a good look at their true nature from History.
This one happened 150 years ago but I think its still relevant because Mitt Romneys church pardoned a terrorist mass murderer of Americans in 1960 and now Romney is running for President.
MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE !!
It was September 11, 1857. A wagon train of 160 settlers on their way to California was massacred by a bunch of Mormons dressed in Indian clothes. 17 children under the age of 8 were spared and lived to tell their story.
1st. They dressed as Indians but after five days they changed tactics.
2nd. Then they went a bit away ,dressed back into normal clothes and acted like the Rescue Party who had negotiated a deal with the"Indians".
3rd, Then confiscated all the guns as part of the deal for "saving" the travellers and Mormon dissidents( who were the reason for the attack in the first place).
4th. Took everybody off a mile or so and shot them all. 2 men got away but were eventually tracked down and killed a day or so later.
5th. Took the 17 children they had not killed back with them to Salt Lake City.
6th. Got away with it. After a publicized trial, with the childrens own testimony admitted into the court, only 1 man was convicted and shot, John D. Lee. ( pardoned by Church 1960)
It ended up being called the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The first time in U.S. history that U.S. citizens were massacred on U.S. soil by religious wackos. This event is even more significant because the total U.S. population at the time was much smaller.(I dont know the exact numbers, maybe only 30 million or so) In todays numbers it would be around 1400 dead

Mormons believe if you live a good life you become a god when you die.
They have secret names so after they die they can find each other.
Mormons believe in wearing special underwear with some sacred symbols this saves them from harm.
You can be baptized to the Mormon faith after you die so, they have secret ceremonies over people who were not Mormons
There IS no Trinity like other people believe. God is God, Jesus is the Son of God and the Holy Ghost is someone else.
Apparent dinosaur fossils are the machinations of Satan. He shaped rocks as if they had been bones of past giants to deceive the very elect.
At some future, secret time, select priesthood holders will be called to a special, secret meeting to prepare for the imminent return of Christ.
Joseph Smith saw God the Father, Jesus Christ, and received dozens of other angelic visits (Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, John, John the Baptist, etc) But in order to "translate" the Book of Mormon, he still needed to resort to magical devices (a kind of 19th century crystal ball) and to wear a breastplate with supernatural powers.
That "Men" and men only can perform miracles, and women can only receive these benefits from "Men".
Joseph Smith will help Jesus and God judge us at the "Last Judgment", because he is the prophet of our dispensation.
and it goes on and on
I would be very worried about Romney

Every Mormon I've ever met has been really, /really/ nice.
The LDS Church does bear some of the hallmarks of a cult. It does keep pretty tight control within the ranks, excommunicating those who question the official version of its history, for instance. But, it's also a large, respected institution.
I'd say the concerns about Romney are comparable to those about Kenedy - the first Catholic to become President. Catholics, too, theoretically hold aliegance to their church foremost.

Yes and no.
I hear what you're saying, but then again, take a look at John Ashcroft. This guy spent a few grand of our tax dollars JUST to put freakin' DRAPES over the bare breasts of Lady Justice.
Say what?
uh-yeah
The guy was so anal about the bare breasts on a STATUE that has stood there for God knows how long...
So, I would have SOME reservations about a politcian's religious leanings; especially one that wants to become the leader of the "free world."

Republicans made religion a HUGE issue for years, by courting the Christian Protestants... and now just want it to disappear?
while your example is of a liberal... I see many conservatives in the South that will probably react in the same way... Religion is the No. 1 topic for MANY VOTERS... CLEARLY if you've ever been here...
lay down with the dogs, you can't complain about the fleas...

the U. S. occurs to be between the main severe religious fundamentalist international places in the worldwide. Christian fundamentalist of direction, no longer Muslim. Extremist fundamentalist faith might possibly have a miles better carry in the U.S. on the common public than say in Iran, although I’ve on no account considered a pollin Iran. yet I doubt 50 % of the inhabitants in Iran thinks the worldwide replaced into created 6,000 years in the past precisely the way it truly is now. it truly is somewhat unusual simply by fact some time past in American history to the time of the colonists, there have been eras of non secular revivalism. maximum at the instant we see this in the Nineteen Fifties, which replaced right into a large era of non secular revivalism. That’s how we get words like “In God We have confidence” and “One usa decrease than God.” religious revivalism picked up lower back at the instant and it truly is now a huge tension.

Yes, it is a shame. Concerns like this are just distracting from the real issues a campaign should be about.
