Solve the "x" variable... 7/(x+1)=5/(x+3)

First: eliminate fractions - multiply the denominators or, greatest common denominator with each term which is,
(x+1)(x+3).

(x+1)(x+3)[7/(x+1)]=(x+1)(x+3)[5/(x+3)]

Sec: cross cancel "like" terms & combine the rest.

(x+3)[7]=(x+1)[5]
(7)(x)+(7)(3) = (5)(x)+(5)(1)
7x+21 = 5x+5

Third: combine "like" terms - subtract 21 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

7x+21-21 = 5x+5-21
7x = 5x+5-21
7x = 5x-16

*Subtract "5x" from both sides.

7x-5x = 5x-5x-16
7x-5x = -16
2x = -16

*Divide both sides by 2.

2x/2 = -16/2
x = -16/2
x = -8
