alligator tongues are attached to the bottom of the mouth, so no, alligators cannot stick out their tongues. When you see them sitting on the bank with their mouth open (gaping), it's the same thing as a dog panting... evaporation of moisture on the inside of the mouth cools the alligator (or crocodile's) blood, thereby allowing it to sit on the bank rather than go back into the water.

As to being chased by alligators or crocodiles, neither of them pursue their prey on land, and whether you run straight line or zigzag, you will not be chased more than 20 feet from the water's edge. (Watch some footage of Nile croc's grabbing zebra or wildebeest, etc, and tell me none of those animals try to zigzag... where's it get them?) Your best bet is actually to keep an eye on the alligator (or croc) and back up 20 feet or so, let it know that you know that it knows that you're there, and -then- if you feel you have to, turn around and run however you want... I personally would save zigzags for someone shooting at me.

Crocodilians may kill 2000 people worldwide every year, but when you break it down to individual species, Nile crocs kill an average of 300 people a year in Africa, alligators have killed 25 people in 50 years in Florida. Not sure of stats for salties and all the others off the top of my head, but if we're talking strictly alligators, and strictly in Florida, more people are killed by dogs -EVERY- year here than alligators have killed in 50 years...

Alligators have an average of 80 teeth in their mouth at any given time. They have 5 sets of teeth for their entire lives. That's 400 teeth, not 3000.

Just wanted to set a few things straight.

Crocodile can't stick out it's tongue.

Crocodiles and alligators are surprisingly fast on land. Although they are rapid, they are not agile, so if you are chased by one, run in a zig-zag line, you will lose them every time.

Crocodiles can see underwater because they have a semi-transparent third eyelid that slides into place when necessary

Crocodiles kill 2,000 people each year. By contrast, sharks kill about 25 people, elephants kill 250 and bees kill about 1,500

An alligator will go through as many as 3,000 teeth during its lifetime.

Alligators and crocodiles do not have tongues!! They have a 'gland' type situation going on, this enables them to hold their breath for long periods of time and not to drown whilst they are attacking and killing their prey.
