Now would you be speaking of the donut and crown of shellacked and tarred canvas. First cut a circle of heavy canvas. Cut a round hole in the center that fits you head--save the small round piece. Cut a six inch strip of enough length to circle and lap the hole in the donut. cut several one inch pieces for the reinforcements.
(I'm dropping the tar)
Shellac the donut and let it dry on a flat surface, then turn it over and do the other side. While that is drying lap over in a circle and shellac the 6 inch strip the size of the donut hole. use the circle from the donut to cut a circle of canvas one inch larger shellac one side of each and put on on the other for stiffness.

I hope you've got the idea by now because I didn't think I would remember this much---and I'm tired of typing.
