If you want to stay in the city, here are some options:
- Elitch Gardens Amusement Park (formerly Six Flags)
- Tour of the Denver Mint (very cool for kids and adults)
- Denver Zoo (not as big as San Diego or the Bronx, but quite good)
- Tour the Coors Brewery (ok... this one's for Mom & Dad... and maybe your 17 year old)
- Denver Art Museum (fantastic new building designed by Daniel Libeskind)
- An evening at Coors Field watching the Colorado Rockies lose
- Take a day trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park (stunning views and lots of wildlife viewing)
- Check out the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News online before you go... there is always a bunch of festivals and exhibits going on

I spent a lot of time in Denver as a kid while visiting my grandparents. My favorite place is the Denver Museum of Nature and Science - it is a really nice museum with an Imax and planetarium. It's also a great place to spend a hot summer afternoon. Another good indoor place that I always enjoy is the aquarium - it's near six flags. The Denver mint is neat too. If you want to get outside, I recommend the botanical gardens - they have a really neat tree house tropical sort of exhibit (at least they did when I was last there a few years ago). They also have a butterfly exhibit. It's a beautiful location and your kids are likely old enough to appreciate it. Of course, you can't go wrong with Six Flags Elitch Gardens if you have kids. But in the summer it's hot and crowded. Water world is fun too. The Denver zoo is a really nice zoo - large and very nicely kept with many great exhibits. If you're into shopping, the 16th St. mall is cool - it's a mile-long street lined with shops and restaurants all the way and cars aren't allowed on it, so it's pedestrian only, except there's a small light rail that can get you from one end to the other quickly. It's walking distance from the capitol building which is really pretty inside - there's also the famous "mile high step" on the staircase in front of the capitol building that you can stand on and have your picture taken - standing on that step, you're exactly one mile above sea level. There's also the Molly Brown House which is a fun quick activity - it was the house of the famous "unsinkable Molly Brown" who survived the Titanic disaster.
AND DON'T MISS CASA BONITA FOR DINNER!!! It's an amazing restaurant with an indoor waterfall. Lots of fun. Great family place. I've always loved going to that place!!
It depends a lot on when you're going and what you're into. If you're going around Christmas, definitely see the zoo and botanical gardens at night for their light show. If you're into sports, there's coors field, for example, where you can catch a baseball game. If you are into music, Red Rocks amphitheatre is a famous outdoor amphitheatre not far from Denver. It's made into a natural rock formation and has acoustics that are amazing! There are a lot of performances there, esp. in summer.
Hope you have fun! Take your sunscreen and stay hydrated because you're at over 5000 feet when in Denver, and the humidity level is really low - it's easy to get sunburned and dehydrated.

Depends on the weekend - a lot of different festivals, etc. all summer long. Check the website Go City Kids Denver for options.
Also consider what is around - don't limit yourself to just Denver.
People have provided some good ideas here (though Casa Bonita is really better for younger and Coors Brewery for older). Some other options to consider - a concert at Red Rocks, a trip to visit Air Force Academy and Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, the Royal Gorge bridge and a hike at Garden of the Gods.

They have rebuilt the fountain light show in City Park. Go to the Natural History Museum and check out the great free family show, also very romantic. Lockout Mountain is also grest at sun set as the great sea of light flicker on, on the way down Lookout stop in at Foss Drug in Golden, ain't seen nothing like Foss, whoa. And there are plenty of malls and kids of that age love mall crawling.
