I bought a dress I loved on sale. It's quite baggy on me and needs to be taken in. I'm fairly new to sewing and am wondering whether I should take it in on the back (there's a zipper) or should I take a little in on each side. Here's a similar dress in this picture. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=FOREVER21&category%5Fname=Dresses&product%5Fid=2035235457&Page=5

Take it in a little on each side.

Figure out how much you need to take it in and divide that by 4. Then resew the side seams that much inside the old seam line. That will split the reduction evenly among the left front, right front, left back and right back.

Bravo if you have lost some weight and need to adjust the dress! For most of us who need to make adjustments around the body its always best to take equal amounts around each seam BUT if you have a zipper and don't want to take it out...best is to take it equally from each side. Goal is to keep the center back and the center front in the center of the body. I assume you are looking for a tighter fit at the waist and the hips? If however you want to change the whole design of the dress to make an A-line dress into a straight dress..Might not work because the arm holes will be off. In My opinion. Hope this helps. I would take it up on both sides. But if you are new to it I would take it to someone to do it. You can usually find people who will do it for a little of nothing. SOmetimes they place adds in the local papers. Also try a dry cleaners they usually can help you out.

Don't forget to also pull up the shoulders to tighten up the top. Make new shoulder seams and cut off the excess.
