Assuming I'm talking about abuse within a relationship I don't think they can be seen seperately.
Most people would say that Mental abuse is worse, but I beg
to differ on that because if physical abuse becomes habitual
in a relationship it is automatically Mental abuse as well.
Physical abuse is just more tangible and visible, but surely
slapping someone about and beating someone up leaves
mental scars as well.
I had a friend in such a relationship, and it was hopeless
She got beaten up regularly, and used me as a shoulder to
cry on.
I was happy to oblige for she was a good warmhearted friend, but no matter how battered or bruised she'd always
go back to him.
She said he'd change, things would get better because she loved him a.s.o..
It never did of course, it only got worse because she only reinforced his habits by being the helpless victim.
She left him after five years, the only thing she got out of it
was a set of false teeth, cause he had managed to punch
them all out over the years.
So I don't buy the argument that physical is in some way less
serious than mental abuse.
Nicky is definetely mentally scarred for life I'm afraid, Her self esteem was shattered, she feels ugly at times, she is more shy and more quiet as before, and laughs and smiles lots less often. Somebody certainly stole the sunshine from her life. 5 years of your life down the drain is a high price to pay.

They are both bad but if i had to choose i would say mental abuse is worst. You can heal from physical abuse, but you'll never forget the mental abuse.

It has been my experience that there is no physical abuse without mental abuse.
When one is inflicted, it is usually in tandem with the other. I'm afraid I cannot separate the two.
Anyone who has had this happen to them truly can understand the point I am trying to make.
