computer is old, shuts off internet on own, computer is very slow

There is a difference between RAM (Random Access Memory, the memory that is used for quick access by your computer) and the harddrive (that is used for storage).

If you want to put in extra RAM this does not equal any stored data loss. If you want more space to store stuff on, you could buy an additional harddrive.

RAM does not affect the "saved" data. That is on your hard drive. You can had as much RAM as your system can hold without loosing anything.
But if this is a really old machine, I would consider moving up to a new or at least a newer machine.

You can buy and extra memory card and install it
