If f is a function, then for any x , it must never yield more than one value for f(x).
If f(x) = sqrt(x), meaning the positive square root, then f is a function. There is either one value of f(x) or no value for any x.
If g(x) = +/- sqrt(x), then g is not a function, as it is multi-valued.

In Space, Time is a function of the energy in space divided by the Power in space.
a Quantitiy =time
is a function= that means it depends on the value of another variable
Energy = E
Power is = P
Algebraically it written thus;
T(E,P) = E * 1 / P
A function can be depend on many vafiables in the equation.
Another example is ; The number of points you get in this game is a function of how many answers you give.

A function is something where you can input a number in place of a variable to get an output.
f(x) = 5x + 2
that is a function, you would use it like f(5) or f(2).
if you had f(5), you replace all the x's with 5's
f(5) = 5(5) + 2
f(5) = 25 + 2
f(5) = 27
Thats really all you do, just replace the variable with the number or variable in the ()'s.

a function is a mathematical concept which relates an input to an output
f(x) = x + 2
is a function, the input is x, the output is f(x)
f(4) = 4 + 2 = 6
the input is 4, the output is 6

Pretty broad question and I don't know what level of math you are taking, but...
A function is a mapping of one set to another in a "one-to-one and onto" relationship.
Said more simply, for every x, f(x) creates one AND ONLY ONE result (if not, then it's considered a relation).
Hope that helps.

A function is just another name for an equation. For a straight line for example the equation is y=mx+b, the function is f(x)=mx+b.

Ok. Y is a function of x. y=f(x). Basically, "you give me an x, and I'll give you a y".
