The library also spreads technology and knowledge. They have books there on the history of the typewriter. Don't people ever read books anymore when they do research papers? Or do students now think they can just type a question into the computer and have their research paper pop out without having to put any thought or work into it?

Difficult to say. One could argue that innovation in printing, telephony/telegraphy, teletype/telex and facsimile technology had a greater and faster influence. Sometimes typewriters were even an obstacle in innovation, like the continuation of the inefficient QWERTY layout in keyboards. OTOH, the typewriter, like the telephone, had an enormous influence on the role of women in the workplace.
