Yep. He was a prince. In the original story after he awakens the Sleeping Beauty, he marries her, but his mom, the Queen, is jealous and she order that the Princess and their two children be cooked and eaten. The cook, who likes the princess--everyone does--substitutes lamb and beef, etc. and the prince finds out and the Queen falls in a pit of serpents and everyone has HER for dinner (or something like that).

Usually a prince (making him a worthy man in the times this was 1st told).
& points to dashelamet for knowing the rest of the story!! It usually gets left off, along with a few other details. The dowager queen (the prince is a king by then) is sometimes called a half-ogre, probably to soften her actions; the Brothers Grimm did that a few times, making nasty mothers into stepmothers, etc.

In many versions I've heard, he was a prince. However, in the original version (written by the Brother's Grimm), the man who wakes her up is a discharged soldier who heard about the sleeping princess in his travels. In the story, there were no more princes who were left TO try to wake her up; none could get past the thorns, or were eaten by the beasts in the courtyard if they did get in through the gates. He is helped out because he helped an old woman carry wood, and she gives him her magic axe.

It's interesting...the Grimm brothers seem to be obsessed with discharged soldiers, helpless 'golden' women, and enchanted tools and weapons. In most of their stories, these themes repeat themselves.

There are about 298347982347 versions of that story out there...and I've been in a stage production where the guy who woke her up was Elvis.

But in most retellings, yes, he is a prince. In the Disney one he is.

No, I'm pretty sure he worked for the same guy that woke Rip Van Winkle and that guy is Sleepy, one of the 7 dwarfs. It's a small world after all.
