Ah, this is part of the confusion, the "mis-direction" of the mass media. There are actually several "Tombs of the Unknown Soldiers", starting before the Revolutionary War; another for the Civil War; different ones for wars since the Civil War. There is one in Biloxi, Mississippi for the Confederates.
Why is it so important? Because every soldier deserves to be honored for his sacrifice. Because these soldiers are "unknown but to God", the Tombs of the Unknown is a way to honor them. We can't put their names on the tomb; we can't call on their survivors to exclaim their virtues. We can do naught but to honor them as "unknowns". The main one is guarded; it is considered an honor to be one of the guards and only a select few are qualified to do so. As to why, because they are so important for our country.

You're referring to the US' Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which has been guarded 24/7, 365 days a year since 1937. (There are, as many pointed out, several Tombs all over the globe symbolizing the numerous unidentified soldiers who have died in combat during wars.)
The US' Tomb is home for the WWI, WWII, and the Korean Conflict. And, since they exhumed (removed) the body of the Vietnam War vet and identified him, that war memorial has remained vacant.
It's guarded 24/7 because the military decided it was unsafe since many tourists would picnic and touch the tomb, therefore tainting its legacy and its honor. So, July 1st, 1937, the upgraded their civilian and military watch to the 24-hour watch we have today. The "Sentinals" as they call themselves, the tomb guards, watch over the tomb 24/7, 365 days a year, regardless of weather. They preserve the honor of the Tomb.
They have their own website, which I put down here. Good luck!

Throughout history, many soldiers have died in numerous wars without their remains being identified. In modern times, nations have developed the practice of having a symbolic Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that represents the war grave of those unidentified soldiers. They usually contain the remains of a dead soldier who is unidentified (or "known but to God" as the stone is sometimes inscribed), thought to be impossible to ever identify so that he might serve as a symbol for all of the unknown dead wherever they fell. Much work goes into trying to find a certain soldier, and to verify that it is indeed one of the relevant nation's soldiers.
Thats why it is guarded 24/7.

History marks only the names of general and leaders and so on. But the real working power for war is men. So this is a tribute to all those who lost their lives at wars and will never be known.

Try this site. It will explain why it exists, who was entombed in it and what goes in to "guarding" the tomb.
