The standard keyboard port is not responding, so I need to enable a USB keyboard in DOS so I can re-install windows onto my old computer ( I took out all of the old hardware and added in newer hardware I had laying around the house excluding the Hard-Drive. So I had to wipe the harddrive clean and now the standard keyboard slot isn't responding. ) Any ideas?

I cannot install a windows OS because when you put it in it gives the option of either:
1. Boot From Hard-Disk ( which has nothing on it and ends up in an error)
or
2. Boot from CD ROM Which I want to select but can't because the stupid keyboard won't work!

Help please x.x

I've resigned to the idea that this cannot be done without having the standard keyboard port working. I'll just reload the old motherboard and stuff back into his case and hope I can get it to work with his old stuff again.

Thanks to those of you who tried to answer.

I gave up on it. My motherboard is dead. So is his for some reason.
My dad made me throw it away.

I think you can enable USB keyboard in BIOS.
F8 when booting your pc.

Not 100% shore.

I guess you have tried without success, because the keyboard recognition is part of the motherboard bootstrap, so it is up to your motherboard to recognize a keyboard (either USB or not) before even the OS kicks in.

If keyboard is not recognized at bios level you are in deep trouble.

You could override keyboard missing error on the bios, but I don't know how to do it without a keyboard.

Then if you can override this error boot a minimal OS used for installing windows but chances are that your keyboard will be still non-functional.

The least of your problems is DOS, because you don't need it to install windows.

Just use windows install CD, unless you cannot for reason I cannot imagine other then having a motherboard which is too old (in which case, is better to buy a new computer because is at least 9 years old).

Try using IBM Dos 7. I think it loads a set of generic drivers for usb.

You can go into your CMOS settings at start up and configure a USB Keyboard setup there.

there is nothing you can do really but put the orginal componets back the reinstall. some mix and matches just dont work. trying the originals the add your parts back. you can most likely find out what is not working properly.

No problem, just plug it into a usb port. Hopefully you have the adapter, if not you can buy one.
