I was on gothamist.com and I read this article, http://www.gothamist.com/2007/05/30/txt_4_tix.php and theres these 2 people on a segway. How do those things balance? hes not even holding onto the handlebars (can someone confirm? i think im right). it doesnt make sense. can anyone explain how they balance?

The frame is attached to a very quick responding computer which can process 100 pieces of data per second, its really quite amazing, all it does is using two gyroscope sensors and two tilt sensors to detect which direction its leaning and then it moves the wheels to adjust and bring back the balance. The user can lean to the left or right and then the segway will make it turn left or right in correspondance by turning one wheel faster than the other, its clever stuff!
They can generally go around 13mph at top speed

Segway has gyroscope to sense tipping forwards or backwards. This controls the drive motor to keep the wheels beneath the centre of gravity at all times. When it's moving the motor is always speeding up or slowing down a tiny amount to stay under the rider, when it's stationary it's easing forward or backward to do the same
