It's not persecution, but my friend, a high school English teacher was almost fired when, while studying 'The Crucible', she told her students that Wicca is a recognized religion.

I have read an article (sorry i can't remember where) about a woman in Massachusetts that was arrested for carrying an athame ( a two sided ceremonial dagger). There was no reason for her to be pulled over or searched except that she is a known Wiccan/ Witch and the officer had it out for her I guess.
I am a Witch (eclectic pagan) and live in a small town that has at the least 20 christian churches. There is no "persecution" per se. but there is a lot of discrimination here. There are jobs you can't get if the employer knows your religion and word travels fast. Also the most annoying is that EVERY christian here tries to "convert" you as soon as pagan or wiccan or witch comes up.

This is not a story of persecution but something you might enjoy reading. I have an uncle that dated (a witch) so many people said at that time. He broke up with her and married my aunt. He didn't believe in witches at this time. When he would go to bed at night if he slept on the outside of the bed he would wake up with thorns and bruises, scrapes all over his body and his hands and feet was always muddy or dirty. He would be exhausted when he woke up. My aunt had to put the bed against the wall and she had to lay on the open side. So as the story goes this witch put a hex on him and was suppose to be riding him like a horse at night. People actually stated that they had seen this. The witch would also tickle his face with large feathers to keep him from sleeping and they would be found in the bedroom the next morning. This woman did die and no one wants to talk about how she died but he never had any rest until she was dead. I think there are still things happening to "witches" that is hid from most people. We still live in a world where the unknown is always persecuted. I do think that in alot of really rural areas that more of this is happening still.

Most Witches still hide their identity, there was a case recently about a Witch whose husband died in Iraq and he was going to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery and she had to fight to have his headstone engraved with a wiccan symbol. He died for us, and she had to fight for his rights, when he should be buried properly, with dignity and honor the way his wife and family wanted.
Witch's are not evil, they don't even believe in the devil, the devil is a Judo/Christin concept.
They were the first doctor's and midwifes, when male doctors started to birth babies the death toll was much higher because the male doctors would go from someone who was ill and then to the birth and cleanliness wasn't practiced to those days.
By the was there weren't any Witch's killed during the Salem Witch trials. Just a fact I thought you should know.

There are modern day witch hunts, but not as dramatic as they were during the Salem trials or the Inquisition. Here are some examples:

I can give you a very personal one. Samhain is a religious day for both Pagans on the whole and Wiccans. Wicca is church recognized by both state and federal governments. If you run Easter or Christmas or Halloween through the "Check spelling" used by Yahoo Answers you will will receive "No more misspellings." If you put Wicca or Samhain into the same program it will not recognize either as an acceptable word.
This is not a large persecution, but it is an annoying one.

YES!!!! the Burning times have NOT ended. The venue has shifted to Africa, parts of South America and Southern Asia and Indonesia. As long as there are religions who espose that there is ONLY one way to worship diety there WILL be persecution of those who follow other ways. The key to ending the Burning Times is for ALL religions to learn to be tolerant of other ways.
God's going to get real upset with humanity if it doesn't stop killing people and using HIS/HER names to do it.

Have you checked this site lately my friend? Witches don't get a fair shake from the doubting or from the religious-minded, who both feel a need to either relieve them of their ignorance or save their souls. By the way, witches have NOT sold their souls to the devil and, can be and are Christians and many other things besides witches. True persecution lies in the incessant need to tell others how 'evil' and 'condemned' they are. To explain in absolutely laborious and boorish terms how we are going to hell in a handbasket and have foresaken God and just have to pray for our eternal souls! Witches, I know, I repeat myself, are NOT evil.

Yes, there was a report in the news a few years ago about South African peasants accusing townsmen of practising witchcraft, rounding them up and killing them by placing burning car tyres around their necks.
The superstitious belief in witchcraft is still strong in many third world countries -- especially those with a mixture of Christian and native beliefs, like Africa and South America.
There are still witch-doctors or shamans who practise in many parts of (non-Christian) tribal Africa.
Here are some news stories, with other examples:
