Green Lantern?
Well, there are a few different things the term relates to.
It is first the Superhero code name of several DC comics Heroes. The first, Alan Scott was a Hero back in the Golden Age (1940's) and the second, Hal Jordan was a Hero back in the Silver Age (1960's), even though both are still around now.
Originally, the Lantern was something that Alan Scott, at the time a train conductor, forged a metor fragment (the Star Heart) into. He then constructed a Ring, and since it was Green, and the main construct was a Lantern (like on the railroad train) he became the Green Lantern.
After World War II, Superheroes disappeared a bit, but there was then a resurgance. This time DC decided to reuse the names, but gave them updated identies and histories.
This time, Green Lantern was part of a Galactic Space Police Force, the Green Lantern Corps with 3600 members, each one protecting a different sector of space for the Guardian's of the Universe (who lived on Oa at the center of the Universe).
There is a huge history, and many members of this team throughout the years, (now there are 7200 plus members of the Corps).
They are noted for their green uniform, and have a Green Lantern they use to recharge their power ring from the Central Battery on Oa.
Members from Earth include Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner.
For a while, the Corps was completely destroyed and only Kyle Rayner remained as a Green Lantern, but as of now, the Corps is back and all of the former members are back in the force.
Alan Scott, since he was brought back, is not an official member of the Corps, but is associated witht he Green Lantern's of Earth.
Hope this helps.

I would have to go with Hal Jordan as well. I grew up with him so I am obviously biased. I recall I was just ending my relationship with comic books when they had him go bad, actually at that time they were killing, or breaking, or cloning all the old heroes out of the comics, (I can't remember Hal's evil identity) and they had Kyle Rainer? I think, take his place. I never read any of his stories, but I have watched a few episodes of the Justice League cartoon and there is that new GL and I assume he is in the comics too, so I guess Kyle didn't last very long.
