I have a 1998 V-Star Classic that makes a roaring sound in 5th gear.?

I bought this bike 1 year ago and this sound has always been there with no changes. It sounds like a gear whine. Any ideas or suggestions?

Could be any part of the drive shaft & bearings, or final drive.
Change the final drive oil (use 80 or 90 weight hypoid gear oil).
Drain the old stuff into a clean pan and check for any metal debris.
That will be a sign of wear and will need further looking into.
95% of bike owners never change the final drive oil.
Everyone should get into the practice of changing it at every oil change.
It's cheap enough. And final drives cost over $500 (parts, not labor).
Without hearing the noise, that's all I can suggest.
