As a casting director, one looks for a person, male or female that can really embody the character. Generally females are more believable as females, and males as males, but this does not constitute discrimination, ex: John Travolta in Hairspray, he does not look like a man at all in the movie, he embodies the character and the audience does not think twice in believing the character's existence.
In any dramatic form, the actor or actress must create an illusion of a different person, a man playing a woman, or a woman playing a man will generally distract an audience too much from the story.
I don't think most movies are sexist in casting.

Well I guess you have a point, but I think it's just easier to have people play roles within their own gender. I also think it really depends on what the part entails.
I can think of a few movies off-hand that have females playing males and vice versa. Up until recently Peter Pan was always played by a woman (and still is in theatre, I believe). And in Hairspray, the role of Tracy's mother, Edna, is always played by a man (in both the movies and the play).

Well, I always thought of it as men would be best playing as men because they were men in the first place and vice versa with the women.
But you, dude, have a point.

There isn't gender discrimination but there is age discrimination. But that's only because the ones doing the screenwriting are usually young.

what??? sandstorm... have you... changed...?
and no i don't think it's sexist because they choose people who can really represent the character best, it's generally easier for females to believably be female characters than males to be females and vise versa.
hope this helps

Back in the 15th century, all actors were men whether the role was male or female.
Guess it's time to jump back in that time machine, huh?

I am sure if a real good cross dresser came in and was very talented and fit the part she'd or he'd be considered.
