OK, aside from songs from Gypsy and I Know Things Now from Into The Woods... can anyone think of a song that a young girl age 8-10 might sing or adapt to sing from a Sondheim show? By adapt I just mean change a word or two if the meaning is not age appropriate or can't be 'played' childishly. Thank you!

She has a pretty good range so don't be afraid to mention a difficult song.

The reason for Sondheim is that the director has specfically requested it. Otherwise it's not usually in her repertoire :-)

There's a lot of good suggestions! I'm not sure if I can pick a best answer on my own! Thank you all regardless of who gets it!

By the way, she got a callback! Unfortunately she had a critical conflict so she did not get the show :-(

"The Glamorous Life" from A Little Night Music - the character of Frederica sings it - the daughter of Desiree.
It was cut from the musical, but the song is in one of the volumes of "All Sondheim" - so the sheet music can easily be found. It's a pretty song about her mother the actress and her glamorous life, even though the daughter is lonely and looks forward to her mother's visit, since she is away on tour most of the time.
It would show off her voice as well as acting. It's a great song.

Nothing's Gonna Harm You -- Sweeney Todd [range might be too big]
Side by Side -- Company
Good Thing Going -- Merrily We Roll Along [though a 10 year old singing about regrets might be a bit ludicrous]
Broadway Baby -- Follies [has been done many times by children, and CAN be quite frightening if done more brassy than cute]
Ev'rybody Loves Louis -- Sunday in the Park with George
Ev'rybody Says Don't -- Anyone Can Whistle [has very fast lyrics]
I once saw a 12-year old girl do The Ladies Who Lunch from Company at an audition. I'm still in therapy. :-)

Wear simple, dressy casual clothes that show that you can act professional but aren't trying too hard. If you're looking for a song that will show off your singing skills, try anything from Les Miz. Here are some other good songs: On My Own I Dreamed a Dream I'd Give My Life For You Memory Too Much For One Heart

Hmmm. Are you sure you want to go Sondheim? His stuff, while beautiful, is notoriously difficult even for adults to sing. If you really want to stay with him, though, I would suggest "Send in the Clowns" or "Everybody Says Don't"....maybe even "You Could Drive A Person Crazy" or "I Feel Pretty"?

A solo version of Our Time would be really good for a kid to do.
Not While I'm Around-Sweeney Todd
No One Is Alone- INto the Woods
Children Will Listen- Into the Woods
I hope she finds something and gets the part she wants!

On The Steps of The Palace!
I know it goes pretty high, but it's still a great song and you could most deffinitely make it childish!
Let me know how things turn out!

"Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd would work really well. It's such a sweet song.
