If it's done with a thread, I can do it. I just grew up learning how to sew and knit and tat and such. Not many people know how to tat anymore, though. But, anyway, I used to teach children how to sew first by hand, of course, making beanbags and ragdolls and aprons and napkins and such. Then, quilting. Sewing machines and patterns and clothes come after handstitching skills. I recommend starting with quilts, in a group. Google some quilting groups in your area and join them. You'll be well on your way with them and what they'll teach you over tea and pleasant conversation.

Find a friend or relative that already knows how to sew. If this does not work, sometimes community education departments, adult education departments, or recreation departments will have classes available. You can also try contacting a local sewing store. I learned from my mom, and also had a home ec class in jr high. As an adult, I refreshed my skills with an adult ed class through the rec department. I don't sew much, but am still able to find easy patterns using only the very basics.

Some of it depends on what kind of sewing interests you - hand embroidery, apparel, quilts, crafts, etc. Many fabric stores such as Hancock's and Joann's offer beginner level sewing lessons. So do adult continuing education programs. Fabric stores also have bulletin boards where people offer their sewing services, including teaching to sew.
If none of these work for you, talk to the employees at a fabric shop and ask them to recommend a teacher for one-on-one lessons.

I would suggest going online and finding a sewing class or a book on sewing as your best bet.

Borrow a machine from someone who will walk you through your first project. Go to the fabric store, pick out a pattern, buy the fabric and notions it tells you to on the back, and away you go!
