Ben E. King sang the original version of the song. In 1987, a movie by that same name was directed by Rob Reiner, based on the novella, "The Body" by Stephen King. It starred: Will Wheaton, (the late)River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and Kiefer Sutherland. The song, of course, was the main music through out the movie.

Ben E. King did the Original Version in 1961. The Temptations didn't even become the Temptations until 1961.

I think the best version was by Mickey Gilley in 1980, written for the movie "Urban Cowboy."
