I have an antique dresser that was covered with contact paper many years ago,to protect the top. Now i have removed the paper and some glue has stayed on. How do i clean it without damaging the finish of the dresser.?

Murphys Oil Soap works well. Try it full strength in a small area. You may need to cut it down with water.

First you need to find out what type of finish your glue is attacheted to... All finishes are different and they determine what type of remover you should use... As I don't know the type of finish.. here is a list of a few...
Undo
paint thinner
denatured alcohol
gasoline
mineral oil
Some of those will remove your finish faster than you can spit some wont, since I don't know what your dealing with I suggest you take your pick from the list and try it on a out of the way spot and see how the real finish reacts. put a drop on an out of the way spot and then let it set for an hour or so if it doesn't cause the finish to fill sticky or bubble up then you can try it on the adhesive.
If they all seem to make the finish peal your last ditch effort is to use dry ice. Freeze the old adhesive and if its old enough it should become very brittle, then use your fingernail to scratch it off (very slow process but if you really want to save the finish underneath its your best bet).

Hot water and vinger mixed 50 50 is all you need. I have a wood business now and that's I use in cleaning up all my glue joints and old glue. The key is the hot water and using a cotton towel to apply and rub it down. Don't pour the water on there just wipe it down. If this does not work you can use a plastic putty knife and try to scrape it off but just be careful not to dig in the wood or finish

Depending on the type of adhesive used on the contact paper, you may not be able to avoid damaging the finish of the dresser.
Try Goof-off! It works well and won't damage the finish.

Good old mineral spirits. Get it at any home center.
Clean safe easy to use. Plus has many other uses.

Put some Old English furniture polish (lots) on it and let it stand overnight.

You could use some methylated spirits or turpentine.
