If you have "ivy type weeds", these can be difficult to control. I would seek out a local reputable garden center, and find a weed killer with the active ingredient of carfentrazone. This is a relatively new product to the home aresenal, but has been available to professionals for some time.

Carfentrazone does a great job killind difficult to control weeds (ivy type) and provides a quick kill.

As far as your dog goes, I would use a spray product, and keep the dog off of the area at least until the spray had dried, and then as long after that as you can feasibly. You'll also want to make sure that the weeds have not been recently mowed, as the more leaf surface area you have, the better kill you will get.

Good luck!

Due to the glossy nature of ivy leaves, herbicides applied to the foliage, such as glyphosphate [Roundup] are not usually successful. To kill over-vigorous ivy, cut through the growing stems and apply ammonium sulfamate to the trunk.
Ammonium sulfamate is a comparatively weakly toxic substance best known use is as a safe, broad spectrum herbicide that is particularly useful in controlling tough woody weeds, tree stumps and brambles. Though not approved for use by organic growers it does provide an option when alternatives have failed.

With oral administration the LD(50) for mice equals 3.1g to 1 kg of body weight, for rats - 4.4g/kg. There were no accumulative properties of ammonium sulfamate detected.

If you are not adverse to using chemicals I use Scotts Weed and Feed, water it in and try to keep my animals off it for a day or so. In my case I am off during the weekend, so I try to plan a day I will be home and can keep them in or take them to the beach or dog park.
If you don't want to use chemicals, hand pulling. If you get it weeded and keep up on it every couple of days or once a week at the longest, it won't be so bad.
