that's your landlords responsibility. if he's refusing to fix it, or wanting to charge you, contact a lawyer. if there's damage because of it, and he's not repairing, contact a lawyer

Oh Geeez! "Dave" needs to calm down.
Just ask them to fix it, and if they don't you need to do it before it causes problems. Call someone like RotoRooter (or any plumber), and they can do it. It's not too expencive, and you'll probably have to maintain it once a year or so depending on the growth rate. Also, ask them about a chemical to pour down the drains to keep it clear.
It's not a big deal. Don't go threatening people with lawyers, or they're sure to not do anything for you.

I agree with the other answers. Contact your landlord and have them fix it. In the meantime, flush about a cup of rock salt down your toilet about once a week. The salt will kill the roots.

Have you contacted your landlord? is it in the easement or his property. Discus this with him. It doesn't cost that much to have roter-rooter come out, then pay the bill and discus it with him. To hire an attorney would probably cost twice as much. There's no reason for it.
