Like General Relativity, string theory is a purely mathematical description of interelations among physical phenomena. It substitutes a mathematical space for a real space. If the two spaces are equivalent, then the theory may be considered true. Proving equivalency requires comparison between the string-theory's space and a physical description of the physical space.
If you have a correct physical description of the universe, then you don't need string theory, but it still might prove useful. A computer can probably calculate multi-body problems more efficiently in a mathematical space than in a real one.

It's a theory.
We don't know how an atom is constructed, not in actual fact.
Yet we know enough about atoms to work with and apply the theories with positive and provable results.
Applicability goes a long way to prove the theory, but it still remains a theory.
What is the applicability of string theory? What of value has it produced to date? Does it work?
A lot can be done with mathematics. Higher math, like string theory , can look good on paper, but may be totally incorrect as a matter of fact.
Even if workable, it may still be inaccurate - but valuable.

Of course it is BS. The fun part is PROVING it is BS by coming up with your own theory and getting others to agree.

Yes BS, Energy is the answer..A single charged state of Matter is the design engineered and created by God himself in a Vacuum space...This Makes for a perfect working Universe where particles can be charged and Uncharged in a massive space that came to rest ,at zero inches of Vacuum.

No, just not confirmed at the moment. It is a somewhat elegant way of explaining the heirarchy problem (why gravity is so weak). It's just out of favor at the moment because it doesn't make many predictions that are within the range of what LHC might see, so most folks are focusing on stuff that might have a more immediate payoff.

No theory can really be BS... it is just a theory... they are not stating it as fact by calling it so.

WHY DON'T YOU ASK MICHIO KAKU. I BET HE KNOWS THE ANSWER BETTER THAN YOU OR MY LOW LEVEL THEORETICAL PHYSICS MEANDERING....NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH STRING CHEESE! STRING THEORY ATTEMPTS TO PROVIDE A COMPLETE, UNIFIED, AND CONSISTENT DESCRIPTION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSE. NOW REMEMBER, THERE IS NO DIRECT EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE THAT STRING THEORY ITSELF IS THE CORRECT DESCRIPTION OF NATURE....IS THIS BS? NO! BUT IS ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE OF GREAT MINDS AT WORK TRYING TO GET A MORE CONCISE AND IN DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNIVERSE AND INNERVERSE (?) GET IT? THIS TOO WILL BE ANOTHER RUNG ON THE LADDER TO GETTING CLOSER TO THE ANSWER.........WHEW, I NEED A DRINK!

No one can say for sure, that's why it is a theory. It certainly is a fascinating concept.

I think it's plausible....But I'm not sure if the theory has actually been proven yet.

key word, theory. we dont know if it is or it isnt yet. its a fascinating concept, and of course since there is no way or really testing it, (yet) its philosophy.
