If there is a force disparity (where the BG's out number you) then generally lethal force would be legal. But state laws vary.

While you have the "Right" to defend yourself, you do not have the right to provoke or antagonize a situation or person. In most States, what you or the person discharging the firearm did, was "Illegal", unless that person was advancing towards you in an aggressive manner, you were not in danger of loss of life or limb therefore you could legally be charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits, or reckless endangerment to the public at large. You do have a "Right" to defend yourself and/or property, but the laws are very limited as to what type of action you yourself may take.
Now, you state if the person was threatening and raging at you, unless that person commits an act of "Actual Aggression" against you, such as swinging the pipe or even a fist, you are NOT within your right to shoot them. You should state to the person that you have called the Police and they're on their way but that is the extent of the actions you may take. If...... the person is destroying your property, under the law, you may use reasonable force to stop them. This is varying through-out the States so I would look into your State Laws on preservation of Life and/or Property. hope this helps.

GOD BLESS/GOOD LUCK!!

That's not self defence. That's craziness. It's illegal and wrong. It's over the top. Excessive force. You're essentially saying your mailbox is more valueable and has more rights than a human being.

You do NOT have the right to shoot anyone UNLESS your life is in imminent danger. Since you fired first, you would be charged.
