I have a cocker-spaniel and two cats. I would like to get invisible fences for all of them so I can start letting my indoor cat out (he wants to go outside so bad) and to keep my dog from running away anymore (which he's been doing every few months for the last 10 years.. he's hoodini i swear) Is there an electric or radio fence that is gauranteed to work for both that I can install myself? I can't really afford to pay to have it installed.

This website offers cat fences and dog fences.. Since the dog is small you might be able to get away with just using the cat fence and if they doesn't work, get the dog fence too and install both.

I've never really heard of a cat having an electric fence. Maybe it's because of cats looking so small and delicate. If you get an electric fence, it will work for anything. Yes, I've seen weirdos put on electric collars. Just slip the collar on, and when the collar touches the invisible fence, it emits an electric shock. Again, I haven't ever heard of a cat having an electric fence, so I highly do not recommend it. Remember, I might be saving you a visit to the vet, but if you wish to do this, just buy your dog and cats shock collars and install a fence. Instead, I recommend having an electric fence for "Houdini", and get an un-climbable fence for your cats. Or, to save money, leave the cats indoors and open the windows.

Honey, there is a "fence" (actually wires) that are buried just beneath the dirt. The animal wears a radio collar and when he goes to cross the "fence", he gets a mild shock. I know that sounds horrible, but it isn't a LARGE shock. Just enough to get his attention. I don't know how the cats react to it, but I've had experience with a dog. My dog, when he was on his hind legs with his front paws on my shoulders, stood taller than me and I'm 5'71/2". The first time I tried this collar and fence on him, it simply frieghtened him! It was so pitiful!. I tried it again for about two days. But when he was outside, he wouldn't get off the back deck because he knew he wouldn't get shocked there. It broke my heart to see him like that, so we went back to the collar and leash method. (With HIM leading me around the neighborhood!! ha) Perhaps with a younger dog, the results would be different. Anything to keep from having to chain them up when they're outside. Hope this helps, and good luck. Scratch that doggy for me.

Most of the systems on the market today would work for either a dog or a cat, but I would be extremely cautious when trying to do this yourself. While everyone is looking for a bargin, your pets are family and a professional will provide you the safest solution. At least take the time to consider speaking with a professional. I would suggest speaking to professionals in your area that could advise you on the possible solutions and costs.

You just need to get the cat a collar like the dogs. If you can lower the voltage a slight bit that would be good, but likely the cat will not be harmed any more than the dogs, if they are about the same size
