Isn't it supposed to be x²+4 when you distribute the ² into the perenthesis?

When you square a quantity you must square all the terms.

You use a method called FOIL (x-2)(x-2) = (x-2)2

Foil stands for Firsts, outers, inners, lasts.

first are x(x) or x2
outers are x (-2) or -2x
inners are -2 (x) or -2x
Lasts are -2 (-2) or +4

Sum all those terms to get x2 -4x +4

Do you know how to FOIL? That is how you solve this. The question is really, what is (x-2) times (x-2)

So, you have this problem (x-2)(x-2)
first, times the first unit of every parenthesis
so x*x=x squared
next, times the outer unit of every parenthesis
so x*-2=-2x
then, times the inner units
so -2*x=-2x
finally, times the last unit of both parenthesis
so -2*-2=4

Combine like terms, and you have...
x squared - 4x+4!!

Try it with numbers and you will see. For instance, (7-2)^2 is the same as 5^2. It is not the same as 7^2 - 2^2. So (7-2)(7-2) = 7^2 - (4 x 7) + 4 = 49 - 28 +4 = 25.

a million. First subtract the 3x. so the concern sounds like this: 3x+7=4x -3x -3x So, 4x-3x=1x or x. and then the concern sounds like this 7=x and that's your very final answer. 2. First distribute the two. so the concern sounds like this: 6+14x=6x+3. and then subtract the 6x -6x -6x so now the concern says 6+8x=3 next subtract the 6. so: -6 -6 so now the concern says 8x= -3 and now divide by potential of 8 so x= -3/8 and that's your very final answer Sorry i did not have time to do something. :(

When you have any two terms linked inside a bracket by an addition or subtration sign, the exponent does not apply to each term seperately. You have to multuple the entire contents of the brackets by itself. As everyone above me said. Now, if you have (4x)^2 then you could bring the exponent to each term to give you 16x^2.

Multiply (x - 2) by itself:

(x - 2) (x - 2) = (x - 2)x - (x - 2)*2 = x^2 - 2x - 2x + 2*2 =
= x^2 - 4x + 4

(x-2)2 is actually (x-2)(x-2) and when you factor/foil it out you get X2-4x+4 becasue:

x*x is x2
x times -2 is -2x
-2 times x is -2x
last is -2 times -2=4

x(squared)-4x+4

because when you do (x-2)² its actually (x-2) times(x-2) which equals x²-4x+4

You don't distribute the square.

(x -2)^2 = (x - 2)(x - 2)

. . . . x - 2
. . .* x - 2
__________
. . . . -2x + 4
x^2 - 2x
__________
x^2 - 4x + 4
