The next administration is going to assume responsibility for the Iraq occupation. Given that 3/4 of the population is no longer in favor of this situation and the cost is billions of borrowed dollars every month, not to mention five to nine hundred lives per year plus the wounded....where is the natural stopping place?

Republican President = 6 more years.
Democratic President = 1.5 more years.

The only difference is how much more money and lives we waste before we leave and let them all kill each other.

I have given my 30 year prediction dozens of times and so far few people agree that in thirty years we will have divided iraq into several districts with corridors no one but military personel can travel .
This will be the pipe lines and supply routes to our permanent bases in Iraq . Squads of men who will quickly deploy should forces attempt to shut down oil production at any of the current opec nations fields . We will do this for a fee plus reduced oil prices .
The first step was creating unrest in the region by displacing millions of people Causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and bringing about a holy war between the two major Islamic religions .
Once the war begins to spread the oil will come under attack and this is where we step up our presence with mercenary troops from Africa .

We will be there approx. 2 months longer than Bush is in office. Whether there is a Republican or Democrat in the white house. No one in politics actually thinks this is a winnable war. And no one including Bush wants to define what winning means. Even the people on this site who profess that we should stay until we win have no idea what winning means. So the minute a reasonable person is in that office they will have to either a) define real objectives (Who would want to be accountable for that disaster or b) get our soldiers the hell out of there.

The PNAC agenda was to have permanent US Bases there. But that couldn't happen without a "catastrophic and catalyzing event like a new Pearl Harbor" i.e. 9/11.

There are those who say we will stay the course until we win. I have not heard anyone define win. If their logic is used we will see our great grand children off to Iraq to fight terrorists.
