Is it crucial to work the summer after my first year? I want to use this time to prepare for 2l year & summer

I want to use this summer to prepare my writing sample, resume, and cover letter for my 2L summer clerkship. I also want to review materials that may help me for later.

You should ask your financial aid adviser about this. If you don't need financial aid, you probably don't need to work, unless your parents say you should. But you should at least do some volunteer work, so that your application for clerkship shows that you were doing something productive, even if it was not a salaried job.
