Definantly get a core2duo intel chip, they are the fastest on the market now, and the lesser ones are not too entirely expensive. The E6600 is fairly cheap and runs at 2.4Ghz, 2 cores. If you know how to overclock, you can get 3.0 - 3.4 Ghz on stock cooling.

Any of Intel's Core 2 Duo series would be fine- the E6300 and up. With this new series of processors, you can't just look at clockspeed ratings in deciding what to buy. The chip design itself is much more efficient than older models. A 2Ghz Core 2 Duo runs faster than a 3Ghz Pentium-D or Pentium-4.

If you're looking at AMD processors, a rating of 3800+ and higher is good for most purposes.

Ignore the other comments. Yeah, there are some good processors there, but you have to think of what you want.

Are you going to be gaming? Running a server? Just surfing the web?

A good gaming processor would be in the 3.0 Ghz range, a good server would be a quad core.

Surfing the web? Don't blow your paycheck, a 2.0 Ghz one would be fine

Josh gave excellent advice. I build my own PCs for friends, family and work. I have a 1.6 AMD and it runs fine for all my basic PC needs, even does decent for my simpler games with a 64mb video card (A Star Trek game a few years old). The exponential price curve is steep. If I were to build me a new one, I'd likely go for a 2.0-2.6.

It depends. What do you want to use it for? And, what are you willing to spend? Definitely, i would recommend getting a Intel Core 2 Duo, if you can afford it, and at least 2MHz.
