Say you're going to the lav and forget to go back. That can be good for leaving 10 or so minutes early. Or you can say that you worked thru your lunch and are leaving early to get your time back.

My grandmother just died

Well, generally I get with a co-worker I trust and let them I know I am leaving. When they need to do it I cover for them. Not many people look for me or know my schedule so it is pretty easy.
