You won't be bothered by snakes in the city. People in the country are hardley bothered by them. Australian snakes might be highly venomous but they are shy and will get out of your way If they hear you coming. Most of the people bitten by snakes are trying to kill the snake.

The two most venomous spiders in Australia are the redback and the Sydney funnel web. There are funnel web spiders in Brisbane but these are a different species and not as venomous as the Sydney ones. You will probably never see one. Wear gardening gloves in the garden and you won't have any problems with redbacks which prefer dark damp places like woodpiles.

The spider that will give you the heebie-jeebies is the huntsman. These are large, hairy and essentially harmless. If they bite you it will be painful but you will be OK. They will only bite if you handle them and they feel threatened.

Huntsman spiders will come into the house in summer. The easiest way to remove them is the glass and card trick. Put a glass over the spider on the wall and slide a piece of card under the spider. This holds the spider safely in the glass. Take it outside and let it go. If you are on your own, remember to open the door before you catch the spider. It is difficult to open the door when you need both hands to hold the spider in the glass.

Most spiders are unaffected or only slightly affected by standard insect sprays so it is pointless spraying them.

Well there are spiders all over Australia and the dangerous red backed spider is common in Brisbane. It is recognised by having a large black body with a round red area on it. They live in gardens alot, along drain pipes and gutters and are commonly found inside shoes left outside. Always shake your shoes/boots out before putting them on. There are many other spiders too and some have painful bites but are not deadly. The Huntsman spider is enormous. It usually stays up high on the wall if indoors. If you have a proper home you shouldn't be bothered too much by them. Hostels are moreso where you see them as they travel in rucksacks and doors are left open more in hostels than private homes. Snakes don't really come into the city. It is the drought and very dry weather that will make them wander about from time to time. You will come across them maybe if you go to National Parks, Fraser Island and outback places. It is important to know how to treat a snake bite with first aid however with the amount of dangerous snakes that are in the country. I wouldn't get anxious about them however. I have never seen a snake there. You need to inform yourselves about deadly animals when going on holiday within Australia later on. The Box jellyfish is in the waters in Spring and Summer and is extremely dangerous so don't swim in the sea at thise times. It will be warm enough to do so in winter there. Sharks also are bad around Harvey Bay and Moreton Island. Be careful of crocodiles further north. Around Brisbane you will be ok. Enjoy it. It's a nice place. My aunt and uncle and cousins live there. Have been there twice.

I moved to Sydney 20 years ago from Liverpool.I am so scared of spiders it's not funny, so out here you have your house sprayed.Someone comes out and sprays all over roof etc with non harmful insecticide and this creates a kind of barrier for creepy crawlies. In all my years of doing this I thing I have seen 3.Also,just beware of walking between trees as they tend to spin their webs there. As for snakes I have only seen them in the zoo.If you go out and walk in long grass in the middle of no where then you may see one, but they don't come into the garden. If you go looking for them you will see them.Good luck in your move. You will love Australia, it is the best thing I have ever done.
