Douching can change the normal bacteria levels that you have in your vagina. This can aggravate yeast infections and irritate the vagina. Your vagina cleanses itself naturally by secreting fluids that drain and flush out dead cells, bacteria, and semen. It's generally not recommended to douche while pregnant. Some studies have shown a potential link between douching in pregnant women and low-birthweight babies, though this research is small and may be inconclusive. Other studies show a link between douching and ectopic pregnancy, in which the fertilized egg attaches inside of the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Douching may also lead to serious problems during pregnancy, such as infection in the baby, problems with labor, and early delivery.

Douches are not safe anyway, let alone during pregnancy. Doctors, pregnancy websites, pregnancy books, and even douche packagings themselves recommend not douching for the duration of the pregnancy. I just wouldn't take the risk. Ask your OB or midwife for an alternative to douching.

Douching can be harmful even when you are not pregnant. It forces bacteria and other dirty critters further up into your body, which can affect the cervix. And absolutely never douche while pregnant.

No douching throughout the pregnancy, it can produce a fatal air bubble to the uterus which will harm the fetus.
